The world faces "two epic events" that are rapidly converging and will reshape the future of personal mobility in 21st century.

That's not only Irv Miller's view, but also the view of Toyota Motor Corporation; and Japan's largest carmaker is preparing for that inevitability.

What are those twin events? Peak oil within ten years and a looming surge in green house gas emissions as an energy hungry world desperately turns to carbon-intensive fuels like coal and tar sands in an attempt to make up for shrinking oil reserves within the next decade.

This is why Toyota sees its conventional hybrids as "buying time" for the planet until more advanced technologies and policies can shift the transportation world away from its nearly 100% reliance on petroleum. As he explains in the video below, taped during the opening session of the 2008 Meeting of the Minds conference held this year in Portland, Oregon, the corporation is pursuing solutions on numerous fronts including plug-in hybrids, advanced battery research from lithium and beyond, to hydrogen fuel cell technology, which virtually all carmakers see as a critical key to powering the electric cars of the future, as was demonstrated by the recent AlCan highway journey from Fairbanks to Vancouver, B.C.

While Miller didn't discuss it in this video, recorded in late July, the company has since revealed that it is also planning to develop an all-electric car, presumably using lithium batteries developed by PEVE (Panasonic Electric Vehicle Energy), which is 60% owned by Toyota. Additionally, the company has set up an independent battery lab to develop energy storage technologies "beyond lithium."
