America's Hydrogen Initiative
Althought the President announced America's hydrogen fuel cell initiative during his 2003 State of the Union address doesn't mean the Hydrogen Economy is a "done deal". In fact the Energy Department has set a deadline of 2015 for industry to decide whether or not its even technologically and economically feasible. That was one of the points Ms. Amy Manheim made during her address at the 2004 Fuel Cell Seminar.
Ms Manheim carefully described the various initiatives being undertaken by the DoE, with support from the Bush White House. This would have been just another somewhat dry, academic exercise had it not been for Dr. Ulf Bossel standing up during the follow-up Q&A sessions. The co-author of The Future of the Hydrogen Economy, Bright or Bleak? took the floor microphone and pointed out that hydrogen is an energy carrier, not an energy source; and as such it won't solve the larger energy problem of growing demand and dwindling resources.
For her part, Ms. Manheim responded amicably and noted that the Department is looking at many different options, hydrogen being just one of them.
