Feed In Transportation

    PLUG IN Vehicles offer a chance to turn some electricity into a bigger payoff. I'm sure many of you have heard of Solar Net-metering. That's when you make extra electricity with your solar grid tied system you Feed it back into the GRID and get equal credit for it as you pay.

   In some areas like Germany they take the Net-Metering and turn it into a bigger payoff called Feed In Tarrif, to encourage more solar. When you put electricity back into the GIRD in Germany they pay you 8 times what they charge you. So you turn 10 cents a Kwh into a dollar. Here in the USA only a few places have that type of tarrif. In Gainsville Florida they pay you 2 1/2 times what they charge you.

   Now add up the numbers. If you take 10 KWh of electricity at say 8 cents a KWh and put it into one of the new efficient lithium battery vehicles like  Tesla, aptera, Nissan LEAF , Mitsubishi MiEV or even a plug in hybrid you go about as far as a gallon of gas or diesel would take you. If gas costs about $2.50 a gallon you turn 80 cents into 2.50. That's over 3 times the profit. Not to mention you could be on Time Of Day and get electric for half that cost so it would be 6 times the profit. 

   I call this Feed In Transportion . An amazing point is you don't even have to have a solar or wind system to cash in. If you real high on helping the environment like I am you also only charge at night Off Peak. This uses excess energy in the GRID that normally gets wasted. It doesn't add to the pollution or fuel use and need no new tramission line or transformers. It's excess since power comapnies can't ramp down coal , nuclear or even hydro at night. 

   When you add that into the fact that an electric vehicle is very efficient you can see what a great payoff it is for the environment, your power company, the GRID and you. So check out the new advanced battery vehicles and get F.I.T. It's good for you and me. 

UPDATE1- With vehicles that have V2G Vehicle 2 GRID you can even charge off peak and sell on peak helping the GRID even more and making more money.

I'm suspicious about the accuracy of this comment, "...only charge at night Off Peak. This uses excess energy in the GRID that normally gets wasted." I'm comfortable with the idea that production scalability ranges from good to bad in something like this order, natural gas, hydro-electric, nuclear, and coal. But I'm not sure this means coal can't be scaled down during a predictable lag at night. When the wind suddenly dies, obviously it will take a while for coal to increase capacity. But given some time and predictability, coal has to be somewhat scaleable. It's not just on and off. Any solid geek references?

Excellent question Brian, I have lots of data on the known excess. The best proof is the low rates on Time Of Day from utilities at nigtht. http://www.groovygreen.com/groove/?p=1782 According to a recent U.S. Department of Energy study, there is so much excess energy on the U.S. grid nightly that if every light-duty car and truck in America today used plug-in hybrid technology, 73 percent of them could be plugged in and “fueled” without constructing a single new power plant. So much for the myth that electric vehicles will cause more emissions. The Portland Press has a great article on the potential benefits of harnessing this excess energy and making the switch to plug-in vehicles. Apparently, each night there is a large amount of renewable power generation capacity that sits idle. Tapping into this source by plugging in our vehicles at night would harness a vastly unused portion of the U.S. grid. From the article, “Studies have shown that plug-in hybrids produce at least 67 percent fewer harmful emissions than a standard gasoline-powered car. Even when accounting for emissions from the production of electricity, national studies have shown greenhouse gas production would fall by almost 40 percent if plug-in hybrids became commonplace. Plug-in hybrids could easily be expected to get over 100 miles per gallon of gasoline, and owners would do most of their refueling at home where the equivalent cost of electricity is about $1 per gallon.”

thanks.... I want to make the distinction between is "excess capacity" vs. "wasted electrity". I think your example of wind power is the only source that has potentially "wasted electricity" (ie, generated but not used). The data that "73 percent of [plug-ins] could be plugged in and “fueled” without constructing a single new power plant" just means we have the capacity to generate more electricity with the plants we have. I looked around a little, I found a quote that said very little electricity is "wasted". But the quote did say that off-peak generation is often produced at reduced efficiency, which supports your case that some "free" electrity exists at night (more demand would increase efficiency). It was an internet post that wasn't worth quoting.

I just clarified the last part of my article. The great book v2g-101 can be purchased on line from Len Beck , not me. He did a lot of reaseach and tells many facts like the amount of excess energy the grid has in there. How do we know utilities and the grid have excess energy off peak ? Just look at the Time Of Day plan in your area, why would they sell energy for less than half the day time cost unless thaey had excess powwr, transmission and transformers. It all adds up !

    Energy efficiency is my main interest. I am a member of the phoenixeaa.com and now own an 05 Prius that I had made into a 10 kw plug-in hybrid. I live in a solar grid tied home with solar hot water, solar tube light, Energy Star appliances and try to live with little pollution and high efficiency. I believe we have to start making changes with ourselves and then the rest of the world will follow. Each person can make a difference.
