Another EV takes to the road

Wednesday | November 22, 2006
Well I promised myself I would have the first drive of my RAV 4 (EV) by Thanksgiving. I'm happy to say I made it. Even though the delivery of some parts held me up, I made my first powered drive today. It's really a lousy, rainy day so I only had a chance to drive around the parking lot but even at that it seems I will have a great performer. I don't have the air conditioning motor mounted and running and my DC to DC converter will not be delivered until next week. In addition I must be careful when going over speed bumps since my underbody battery pack would drag due to my losing 3.5" of original vehicle height. Hopefully my set of four RAV4 EV springs will be here soon. For all those who expressed an interest in seeing some photos I'm slowly uploading a web link. I did make one change mid stream. I installed a Toyota MR2 electro/hydraulic power steering pump in place of the original pump. It really works great. Only thing now is to get a circuit set up to detect when to turn the pump on and off. Idle power is just a little over 180 watts but every little bit helps.

Good job! I'll be considering converting when Firefly lightweight PbAs come out, since Li power is still pricey. I really want an affordable EV that will be quick; I'm afraid that I was spoiled by my week's rental of a GM EV1 almost seven years ago.

hey Larry at 180 watts idle thats 10,000 watts to go 60 miles , you may want to look at fitting a non electric rack and pinion steering rack

Robert I have tested the steering in both manual and power mode and believe me I'll stick with the power, especially when parking. BTW be careful with mixing power and energy. 10,000 watts to go 60 miles could be done I suppose but then it would have to be done at the speed of light or something since watts in this context has no time element. Think of it this way. If my idle power is 180 watts, and if I go 60 miles at say 60 mile per hour I have used 180 watts of power for one hour or about 180 watt-hrs of energy. At 12 volts my current draw is about 15 amps. 180/12 = 15. 15 amps times 12 volts for one hour equals about 180 watt-hrs. I calculated that my RAV4 should consume about 280 watt-hrs/mile at 60 mph on level ground. That means that my power steering would consume in one hour, less than 64% of what the entire vehicle consumed per mile for a one hour trip. I think that is a great trade off. BTW I have already developed a circuit to shut off the pump under most open road conditions. It will only come on when I exceed a certain torque level or steering wheel deflection,or when the vehicle is traveling less than 10 mph.

woops me bad your right must have been to many long nights , working on a new high power prinetd cicuit board for a solar panel company. I have used rack and steering on my race cars but they work better when you reduce the caster.

Hi, 'BTW I have already developed a circuit to shut off the pump under most open road conditions. It will only come on when I exceed a certain torque level or steering wheel deflection,or when the vehicle is traveling less than 10 mph.' Please be careful how you set that up. I would not want to be slowing or accelerating in a turn and have the power steering come on or go off. Best Wishes, Mitch
