ELECTRIC VEHICLES 101

WELCOME

Welcome to our tutorials section. Here you will find -- as we develop them -- simple, quick slideshow-like tutorials to help familiarize you with our EV World both in the sense of this online resource and the large, external, real-world sense of technologies and concepts. We encourage you to begin with our first two "lessons": a guide to the new features on EV World and the EV Basics 101 introduction to electric vehicles. Access them using the drop-down menu below.

What is an EV?
  • An EV is any vehicle that gets some or all of the power it needs to move from electrical energy
  • All EVs use electric motors for power
  • Almost all EVs store electrical energy in batteries

How Do EVs Work?
  • First, an EV needs electrical energy. This can come from a plug in the wall of someone’s home, from an electrical generator located on-board the EV, or from somewhere else.
  • Next, that electrical energy needs to be stored. Most EVs store the electrical energy in batteries, but some EVs use flywheels or “Supercapacitors” to store the energy.
  • Finally, an EV needs a controller, its “electronic brain,” to deliver the stored electricity to the motor

Why Are EVs Better? (Click through the next pages for details)
  • EVs will cost less than gasoline-powered cars to buy and operate on a day to day basis
  • EVs are more convenient that gasoline-powered cars
  • EVs are better for the environment
  • EVs make the world a safer place
  • EVs will help us prepare for a future without oil

Why will EVs cost less?
  • EVs have far fewer moving parts than gasoline-powered cars.1 Fewer moving parts will mean less manufacturing cost and less maintenance
  • EVs are much more efficient than gasoline-powered cars, so they waste less energy.2 More efficient vehicles will mean lower energy costs
