Detroit Must Help America End Its "Oil Addiction"
WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush's State of the Union speech Tuesday addressed a sensitive topic for Detroit's automakers: America's energy dependence.
He pledged to increase government research that would lead to better batteries for gasoline-electric hybrid and electric cars and fund research that would make ethanol fuel more a practical alternative.
"By applying the talent and technology of America, this country can dramatically improve our environment, move beyond a petroleum-based economy and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of the past," Bush said.
