Just How Green Can A Smart Be?
England - Fact: possibly the most economical car made by a major manufacturer today isn't sold in the UK (or in South Africa) even though it's the greenest car there is in terms of carbon-dioxide emissions.
It's the Smart ForTwo CDI, a little three-cylinder 799cc turbodiesel that uses about 3.5 litres/100km.
Unfortunately we can't have this ultimate eco-Smart. It's something to do with parts supply and right-hand drive and the fact that the regular petrol Smart is economical enough.

The Smart unit, part of the Mercedes group, has not posted a profit since it started up in 1998.
The UK has been selected to run a market trial for the introduction of a fully electric version of the popular two-seater car.
