Driving in LA Is Getting Positively Electric

Lefteris' vehicle, built on the frame and body of a 1971 Porsche 914, is not a hobby car. It's been his daily transportation for getting around L.A for the last 12 months, racking up some 8,000 miles.

When Lefteris, a professional photographer in Los Angeles, says his other car is a gas guzzler, he's talking about the icon of environmentalists, the Toyota Prius.

Lefteris is part of a grass-roots movement of people who are fed up with the auto industry for not offering affordable all-electrical vehicles and who are building their own.

"It is possible," say Lefteris, who goes by one name. "I didn't do it for the cost savings, though it turns out to be an inexpensive way to transport myself. We must stop sending money to countries that are often hostile and repressive, and do something to save our fragile planet."


Powered by advanced lithium-ion batteries and two 67bhp (50kW) electric motors to drive the front and rear axles, the Mixim is a four-wheel-drive car with a theoretical top speed of 112mph and a potential maximum range of 156 miles.

Dodge ZEO is 2+2 electric muscle car for the 21st century powered by 200kW electric drive with 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds and range of 250 miles.

The Air Car may do better than fuel-cell cars, but experts say that using grid power to charge a battery-powered electric vehicle is much more efficient than using electricity to compress and store the same amount of energy in a tank.
