Electric Cars Are Here to Stay

A recent study by Harris Interactive indicates that 20% of Europeans are very or extremely likely to purchase a plug-in hybrid model for their next vehicle. Pictured in Th!nk Global Model A306 electric car manufactured in Norway.

“The electric car is here to stay,” said Jan-Olaf Willums, CEO of electric car company TH!NK GLOBAL, in comments to the FT-WEC Energy Leaders Summit in London last week.

With growing urban populations around the globe, electric – or plug-in – cars are an increasingly viable option for local journeys.

Car manufacturers should take note, says Willums. If they don’t, they could be missing out on new customers.

Ray Lane, managing partner of venture-capital firm Kleiner Perkins, Caufield and Byers, which has invested in Think, believes Think could eventually sell as many as 30,000 to 50,000 City cars a year.

The production electric vehicle to be introduced in 2010 will have a unique bodystyle and is not based on any existing Nissan model, unlike the technology 'mule' pictured above.

The 100-mile range electric car has been operating with Japanese power companies for the last two years.
