ASI's Carbon Nanotube Research Catches GM's Eye

GM is interested in ASI's research involving carbon nanofibers and lithium ion batteries.

CEDARVILLE, Ohio — An Ohio company will play a major role in developing a powerful battery for General Motors' electric car.
The all new Chevy Volt an electric powered vehicle is expected to roll out in two years. Officials said you can drive the Volt up to 40 miles per charge. But that could change for the better thanks to researchers here in Cedarville with Applied Sciences Incorporated.

Founder of ASI Max Lake calls his research with GM a top priority for the company. Both sides have been in talks for the past two years. GM is interested in ASI's research involving carbon nanofibers and lithium ion batteries.

"Increasing life of battery per charge from 40 to 80? Actually technology we developed might have more impact than that but rely on complimentary advances," said Lake.

The phosphate-based Epoch batteries are equipped with an advanced management system that will monitor and adjust cell performance.

The battery system was developed by CSIRO in Australia, built by the Furukawa Battery Company of Japan and tested in the United Kingdom through the American-based Advanced Lead-Acid Battery Consortium.
