Kia to Introduce Electric Car in 2012

EVs will be based on Hyundai i10 and some 2,000 will be built for South Korea market.

LOS ANGELES--Hyundai Motor Group, the umbrella company that includes Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, plans to launch a Kia-badged small electric vehicle by year end and follow with more EVs starting in 2014, the company said this week.

The announcement did not say whether the new EVs eventually would be sold in the United States.

Kia has dubbed its EV effort the TAM project. Kia's first EV will be a small vehicle based on the platform underpinning the Hyundai i10 minicar. The company plans to produce 2,000 units in 2012.


2011 Kia Optima Hybrid is company first.

Kia estimates Optima Hybrid will achieve 40 mpg, while being able to hit 100 km/h in electric drive mode on 30 kW lithium battery pack.

Company states the car will have an electric-first range of 80km (50mi).

A twin-pack LiPoly 27 kWh battery provides driving range of 200km (124 mi).
