General Motors' Chevy Volt is the company's flagship electric car, but so far sales have been disappointing. General Motors (GM) is hoping to rev up sales of its next Volt model by reducing the price to lure in more consumers.

For a sedan, the Volt's current price tag of $39,995 is pretty steep. The company plans to make the next model more purpose-built, which will allow it to cut thousands off the sticker price.

Drivers who have already purchased a Volt have been overwhelmingly pleased with the electric car, but GM hasn't been ale to move Volts in the numbers that it hoped. That said, GM did triple the number of Volts it sold during 2012, bringing the total up to 23,461.
