BMW's $1000 i8 Electric Hybrid Key Fob

The high-tech key fob for the BMW i8 electric hybrid sport coupe is rumored to run as much as a $1000.

Rarely is a car’s key fob as spectacular as the car itself, but BMW has bucked that trend with the new i8 plug-in hybrid.

As you can see, the i8's dapper fob features a high-res LCD displaying electricity and fuel reserves as well as as total available range. The key also tells the owners when his or her i8 is fully charged with 22 miles worth of electricity. And, judging from the Apple-esque page icons at the bottom of the screen, this key does even more, which may well be something to do with pre-heating the car.

One thing you shouldn’t do with this key, however, is lose it. BMWBlog reckons a replacement would cost around $1,000. Knowing BMW, that’s probably a conservative estimate.

The BMW i8 arrives in the first half of next year with an appropriately futuristic price tag of $135,925. Find out more below.
