German E-Bike Market Sees Growth Despite Drop in Bicycle Sales

Electric-assist bicycle sales in 2013 saw nearly 8% rise totalling 410,000 units; 257% more than similar sales in USA over same period.

BERLIN, Germany – A long winter and a rainy summer caused bike shipments in Germany to dealers to drop 5.5% to a total of 3.75 million units in 2013. E-bikes however, continued to perform strong with sales rising 7.9% to a total of 410,000 units.

Money wise the German bike market (including electric bicycles) dropped with 2.5% to € 1.98 billion. Germany's industry association 'Zweirad Industrie Verband' (ZIV) estimates that the total market including parts & accessories sales and workshop turnover stood at close to 4 billion euro.

By the end of 2012, its estimated there were 180 million electric bicycles in use in China, an increase of 36 percent over 2010.

New standard would increase maximum speed from 20 km/h to 26 km/h (16 mph), but would also require speed sensor to cut-off electric assist above top speed.
