Volkswagen Announces Major Initiative to Spearhead Emission-free Driving in China

CEO of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft announces plans, starting in 2016, for the 'biggest initiative for e-mobility in China’s automotive history.'

Car-making giant Volkswagen has announced it will spearhead China’s largest electric vehicle programme as it plans for a future of emission-free driving.

“The Volkswagen Group is once again assuming a pioneering role in China and launching the biggest initiative for e-mobility in China’s automotive history,” Dr Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, announced at the Auto China motor show in Beijing.

The initiative gets underway with the launch this year of the Volkswagen brand’s electric up! and e-Golf models.


Zelectric converted Volkswagen Beetle.

Retired advertising executive David Bernardo takes vintage Beetles from 1960's and upcycles them with lithium-ion-powered electric drive systems.

Volkswagen 2013 Jetta Hybrid.

Jetta Hybrid is only hybrid to use turbo-charged engine, matting it to lithium-ion battery pack that can propel the car in EV-mode up to 20 mph.

Volkswagen XL1 is predecessor to limited production version XR1.

Automobile Magazine tests the production-ready version dubbed the XR1 and finds it gets 147 miles per gallon on a 135 mile test drive.
