I have read your piece entitled 'Why Well-to-wheel matters and found it quite interesting - BUT - I had understood that well to wheel when relating to motor transport took into account their development, manufacture of the car and its final disposal as well as just the fuel that it used during its useful life. By these wider standards I have heard that hybrids (of any type) drop down the league tables as they take so much development and are so costly in carbon to manufacture because of their complexity and are carbon heavy in their disposal for the same reasons. By these wider standards I understand that fairtly simple, low tech vehicles come out much better and most particularly it is good to keep the car you have almost irrespective of its engine, fuel type or consumption because it means that you are not requiring a new car to be manufactured and are therefore saving significant amounts of manufacturing process carbon. Is there any data on this and if so what doess the research show? (I'd like to know because I feel that I should be helping the environment but just think that carbon emmissions when you're running the car is just too simple an argument)
