Does Energy Efficiency Reduce Carbon Emissions?

Energy efficiency cuts emissions overall, but rebound effects complicate the picture. The Jevons paradox shows that efficiency can spur more energy use, yet modern data indicates efficiency has already avoided 7 gigatons of CO2 (2010–2022) and remains central to net‑zero pathways. Even if efficiency increases total energy use, emissions still fall when the underlying energy supply is decarbonized.
