A new peer-reviewed MIT study finds battery-electric vehicles produce lower lifetime greenhouse gas emissions than comparable gasoline vehicles in every U.S. ZIP code, regardless of the local electricity mix. Researchers analyzed how vehicle type, driving patterns, climate, and regional power generation affect emissions, concluding EVs consistently outperform internal combustion vehicles. The study also found plug-in hybrids can deliver 80-90% of EV emissions reductions when regularly charged, with EVs becoming even cleaner as electric grids continue adding renewable energy.
