Researchers at Queen's University Belfast developed a low-cost, open-source iron flow battery, using 3D printing to slash cell costs. Because energy is stored in liquid electrolyte tanks outside the cell stack, capacity scales simply by enlarging tanks - making flow batteries ideal for stationary grid-scale storage, solar and wind farms, microgrids, and industrial sites to balance intermittent power.
