When Greening Isn't Good: Study Finds Climate-Driven Greening Is Reshaping East Asia's Air Pollution

A new study finds that climate-driven "greening" across East Asia has altered natural emissions of plant compounds (BVOCs), affecting the formation of ground-level ozone and fine particulate pollution. Using updated satellite vegetation data (2003–2024), researchers showed that older vegetation maps can significantly misrepresent air quality, underscoring the need to keep atmospheric models current as ecosystems change.
