Architecture & EV Strategy
The 2026 CLA is the first model built on Mercedes' new Modular Architecture (MMA), supporting EV, hybrid, and ICE powertrains with a unified body and interior. This strategy allows Mercedes to streamline development across drive types while introducing electric sophistication to its entry-level lineup. An 800-volt electrical system, inspired by the Vision EQXX, promises ultra-fast charging speeds and energy efficiency.
Performance & Range
The CLA will be offered in two versions at launch:
- CLA 250+: Rear-wheel drive, 268 hp, 247 lb-ft of torque, 0–60 mph in ~6.6 seconds, with an estimated EPA range of 350 miles.
- CLA 350 4MATIC: All-wheel drive, 349 hp, 380 lb-ft, 0–60 mph in ~4.8 seconds, with an EPA range of around 275 miles.
Both models are powered by an 85 kWh battery pack and feature a two-speed transmission on the rear axle to optimize highway performance.
Charging Capabilities
The CLA EV supports 320 kW DC fast charging on 800V architecture, enabling up to 200 miles of range in just 10 minutes. It also includes 9.6 kW AC home charging support and comes equipped with NACS (Tesla) compatibility. A 400V converter module will be available from spring 2026 to ensure compatibility with older charging infrastructure.
Design & Aerodynamics
The CLA's exterior combines elegance and performance. It features flush door handles, frameless windows, a lightbar front fascia, and optional 21-inch wheels. Aerodynamic design cues from the EQXX help it achieve top efficiency, particularly on the Shooting Brake variant, which achieves a WLTP range of up to 472 miles (761 km).
Interior & Technology
Inside, Mercedes introduces its new MB.OS platform with fourth-generation MBUX. This includes a panoramic dash-spanning display, intelligent voice assistant, and OTA (over-the-air) software updates. Features such as heated/massaging seats, Dolby Atmos-enabled Burmester 3D audio, and the brand's first front trunk in nearly a century enhance comfort and utility.
Driving Experience
The CLA delivers a refined and quiet ride, aided by its two-speed gearbox and sound insulation. Mercedes' MB.DRIVE system offers Level 2++ semi-autonomous driving and includes driver assist, parking, and brake-by-wire functions—all updateable via OTA.
Market Position & Competition
Expected to start around $44,000 USD, the CLA EV is positioned against rivals like the Tesla Model 3, BMW i4, Polestar 2, and BYD Seal. With superior range and charging capability, Mercedes aims to outclass its competitors in both performance and luxury.
