Hydrogen-Electric HY4 Passenger Aircraft Sets Altitude Record

21 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

Stuttgart-based German aerospace company H2FLY has claimed a new world record for its four-seater HY4, which became the first hydrogen-powered passenger aircraft to reach an altitude above 7,000 ft (2,134 m) on April 13. In addition, the HY4 made the first flight by a hydrogen-powered passenger craft from one major airport to another, traveling 77 miles (124 km) from Stuttgart to Friedrichshafen on April 12.

First taking to the air in 2016, the HY4 with its distinctive twin-fuselage design is based on the Pipistrel Taurus G4 aircraft. However, where the G4 is an all-electric aircraft, the HY4 is a hybrid design powered by a low-temperature hydrogen fuel cell system developed by the DLR Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics (DLR) in association with Hydrogenics.

To save weight, the hydrogen is stored under a pressure beneath 5,800 psi in two carbon composite tanks, one in each fuselage. These feed into the fuel cell, while lithium-ion batteries provide a power boost during moments of peak demand by the 80-kW electric motor. The aircraft has a cruising speed of 90 mph (145 km/h) and a projected range of up to 900 miles (1,500 km) under minimum payload and optimum flight conditions.

Hydrogen-Powered Ferry Prepares to Launch in San Francisco Bay

21 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

Aptly named Sea Change, the 70-foot (21-meter), 75-passenger ferry will service multiple stops along San Francisco's waterfront. It was built at All American Marine shipyard in Bellingham, Washington, and was undergoing tests with the U.S. Coast Guard in nearby Puget Sound.

As he spoke, three hydrogen fuel cell stacks whirred in the engine room, helping power two propellers that move the ferry along at a top speed of 20 knots. All American Marine project manager Jeff Sokolik helmed Sea Change, pressing buttons on a touchscreen that engage automated systems communicating with the engine room.

Biden Launches $6B Effort to Save Distressed Nuclear Plants

20 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

"A strong majority of states -- about two-thirds -- say nuclear, in one fashion or another, will help take the place of fossil fuels. A dozen U.S. commercial nuclear power reactors have closed in the past decade before their licenses expired, largely due to competition from cheaper natural gas, massive operating losses due to low electricity prices and escalating costs, or the cost of major repairs.

"This has led to a rise in emissions in those regions, poorer air quality and the loss of thousands of high-paying jobs, dealing an economic blow to local communities, according to the DOE. A quarter or more of the fleet is at risk, the DOE added. The owners of seven currently operating reactors have already announced plans to retire them through 2025."

Wearing Down Joe Manchin and His Fossil Fuel Allies

20 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

"The grassroots group West Virginia Rising organized the blockade with support from many other groups like Beyond Extreme Energy (for which I volunteer) and the Poor People's Campaign, whose Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II delivered a rousing speech as police arrested protesters:
It's time for change in West Virginia. Manchin swore he would defend the Constitution against enemies foreign and domestic. He has violated that oath. Instead of establishing justice, he has established injustice at every turn. He has decided that the US Chamber of Commerce agenda is better than the agenda for the people of West Virginia and the United States. At every turn, he has chosen money and greed.

Wind Blows the Competition Out of the Water

19 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

"The new record, which occurred on March 29, marks a historical first for wind power. Although wind has occasionally beat either nuclear or coal for a day, it has never produced more electricity than both at the same time. The 2,017 gigawatt-hours of wind power generated on that Tuesday late last month was enough to make wind the U.S.’s second-largest producer of electricity -- trailing only natural gas, which produced 3,287 gigawatt-hours."
