Rising Authoritarianism and Worsening Climate Change Share a Fossil-Fueled Secret

28 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

"At the same time that the energy sector has sought to influence policies on climate change, it has also worked to undermine the public’s understanding of climate science. For instance, records show ExxonMobil participated in a widespread climate-science denial campaign for years, spending more than US$30 million on lobbyists, think tanks and researchers to promote climate-science skepticism. These efforts continue today. A 2019 report found the five largest oil companies had spent over $1 billion on misleading climate-related lobbying and branding campaigns over the previous three years."

Review of 2022 Ford e-Transit Delivery Van

26 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

"A proper testing regime means the E-Transit has been put through all the same paces as any other model in the line-up, while a 68kWh battery pack gives the Ford a 'targeted' WLTP maximum combined range of 196 miles."

"Available in 25 different versions, this will vary a bit, but that's 100 miles more than the equivalent Mercedes-Benz eSprinter (which only comes in one version in the UK).

And though the starting price of £47,700 (plus VAT) may seems astronomical for a van ? even a large highly specced large one - the competitions' five figures typically start with the number six."

Not Just Batteries: The Chemistry of Electric Cars

25 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

"An electric vehicle can only perform safely and efficiently if the materials used in its construction have a particular set of properties, both alone and in combination. Parts of the vehicle are subject to extremely high voltages, temperatures and stresses, so some components must be completely electrically isolated, and the vehicle must also be resistant to such stresses. The battery must be protected from crash damage to prevent fires, and the whole vehicle must be made from materials that are low in density to reduce the total vehicle weight. This problem limited the take-up of the earliest models. The materials must also be as durable and inexpensive as possible."
