Drones Have Transformed Blood Delivery in Rwanda

24 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

" Writing in the April issue of Lancet Global Health, Nisingizwe analyzed nearly 13,000 drone orders between 2017 and 2019 and found that half of the orders took 41 minutes or less to deliver by drone. On the road, that median time would be at least two hours. Reports of wasted blood donations dropped."

Addendum

"The zero-emission quiet flights can go as far as 300 kilometers (186 miles) and are inexpensive compared to other modes of transport, according to Zipline, based in South San Francisco, California." -- ABC News

More Americans View EVs As a Primary Car in the Household, MINI USA Survey Reveals

24 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

"The survey, which repeated the same set of questions used in a 2019 questionnaire carried out by MINI USA, indicates that more Americans – and particularly younger and female consumers – view electric vehicles as a primary car in the household more than any other use case. This represents a shift from 2019 where more respondents selected “commuting car” and “city car” as preferred uses.

"A point that has remained consistent from both surveys is daily travel distance, as 76% of respondents say that 75 miles of battery range is sufficient for everyday driving.

"While vehicle usage has remained consistent, expectations for faster charging times rose over the last three years. This not only signals an improved perception of available charging technology and its progression over recent years, but an increasing expectation that greater improvements in charging is necessary for rapid EV adoption. More than two-thirds (67%) of consumers now believe charging should take no more than an hour, an increase from 59% three years ago."

Without a Gas Tax, How Will EVs Be Charged for Road Use?

24 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

"Fuel taxes account for 84 percent of federal and 29 percent of state highway funds. But where will the funding come from when more and more drivers switch to electric vehicles?

"Currently, the federal tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon. The average state gas tax is 31 cents; it ranges from 8 cents per gallon in Alaska to 51.1 cents per gallon in California.

"...The problem that many EV owners are facing is that some states are taxing electric vehicle drivers at rates much higher than the average driver pays in gas taxes, effectively punishing drivers for choosing a zero-emission alternative to traditional gas-burning vehicles. "

GM's Electric BrightDrop Zero 600 Van Snags Distance Record With 260-Mile Run

23 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

"We don't have all the data points for you yet. EV delivery vans like the Zevo 600 and Rivian's Amazon van are fairly new, and for some reasons GM (BrightDrop is a subsidiary) is being coy about crucial information like storage capacity of its Ultium batteries—which are similar to what the Hummer EV uses. But we have one number we can share with you: "nearly 260 miles."

Which represents about how far the Zevo 600 went recently, snagging a distance record certified by Guinness--for whatever that's worth. For a big, boxy vehicle of substantial size, that's a big accomplishment."

The Future of EV Charging is Bidirectional, If You Can Afford It

22 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

"It has already been proven that bidirectional chargers can save users money. A consortium including energy company OVO Energy and Nissan ran a three-year trial and installed 330 bidirectional chargers across UK homes. They found that participants could save up to £725 a year in electricity bills by leaving their cars plugged in when not in use and supplying the grid during peak evening hours. These are additional savings to switching from a conventional to an electric car: It costs on average a little more than £500 a year to charge an electric car compared with £1,435 a year for petrol or diesel. Charging an electric car at home is usually cheaper than using public charging stations, and on university campuses and at workplaces it is sometimes even offered for free."

Could This Be The EV Charging Station Of The Future?

22 Apr 2022 | Synopsis

"...as EVs become more prevalent there will become a greater need for public Level 3 DC quick charging stations, whether to keep longer-range models running on extended road trips, or for any time the state-of-charge meter starts running uncomfortably low. Level 3 stations can bring some of the latest EVs up to an 80 percent charge in as little as 20-30 minutes."
